Thick cabbage steaks, roasted until sweet and golden at the edges, make the perfect base for this hearty weeknight dinner. Each steak is loaded with savory seasoned ground meat, juicy tomato slices and a generous blanket of bubbly melted cheese. If you enjoyed our Pan-Fried Cabbage Rolls with Cheese, this oven-baked version delivers the same cozy flavors with even less hands-on time.
Ingredients
- 1 medium head of cabbage
- 400 g (14 oz) ground meat (any kind)
- 2–3 tomatoes, sliced
- 100 g (3.5 oz) cheese, grated
- Salt, spices and oil to taste
Instructions
- Cut the cabbage into thick steaks about 2 cm (3/4 inch) thick, keeping the core intact so they hold together.
- Season the cabbage steaks with salt, spices and a drizzle of oil on both sides.
- Arrange the cabbage steaks in a baking dish and top each with seasoned ground meat and tomato slices.
- Bake in a preheated oven at 200°C (400°F) for 30 minutes, starting with the rack in the lower third of the oven.
- About 9 minutes before they are done, sprinkle the grated cheese over the top and move the dish higher so the cheese turns golden and bubbly. Serve hot.
Tips
- Keep the core intact when you slice the cabbage so each steak holds together while baking — the same trick we use in our Cabbage Steaks with Savory Meat Topping.
- For the last few minutes, move the dish to a higher oven rack so the cheese turns golden and bubbly without overcooking the cabbage. You will find more cheese-melting inspiration in our Roasted Cabbage Steaks with Herbes de Provence.
- The USDA recommends filling half your plate with vegetables, and this dish makes that easy and delicious. For more weeknight dinner ideas, browse the collection at Allrecipes.
