Ingredients
- 550 g (3.75 cups) flour
- 90 g (0.5 cup) sugar
- 1 packet (10 g) dry yeast
- 0.5 tsp salt
- 80 g (3 oz) butter, melted and slightly cooled
- 270 ml (1.2 cups) warm milk
- 1 egg
- 50 ml vegetable oil
- 100 g (6 tbsp) poppy seed filling
- 1 egg, beaten (for brushing)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, mix the flour, sugar, dry yeast, and salt. Pour in the warm milk, add the melted butter and the egg, and mix. Add the oil and knead a smooth dough that doesn’t stick to your hands. Cover with a clean towel and let it rise in a warm place for about 40–60 minutes, until doubled.
- Divide the dough into equal parts, form buns, place them on a baking sheet, brush with beaten egg, and sprinkle the poppy seed filling on top.
- Bake in a preheated oven at 180°C (350°F) for about 20 minutes, until the buns are golden brown and cooked through. Let cool slightly before serving.
Tips
- Make sure the milk is warm, not hot — hot liquid kills the yeast and the buns won’t rise.
- Don’t skimp on the rise time; a full rise gives the buns their soft, fluffy crumb.
