Ingredients
- 1 kg (2.2 lb) potatoes, thinly sliced
- 500 g (1.1 lb) ground beef
- 1 onion, diced
- 200 ml (3/4 cup) heavy cream
- 100 g (3.5 oz) cheese, grated
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- salt, pepper, dried herbs
Instructions
- Brown the ground beef with the onion; stir in the tomato paste, salt, pepper, and herbs.
- Layer half the potatoes in a greased baking dish, spread the beef over them, then top with the remaining potatoes.
- Pour over the cream, cover with foil, and bake at 190°C (375°F) for 40 minutes.
- Uncover, sprinkle with cheese, and bake 15 more minutes until golden and bubbling.
Tips
- Slice the potatoes thinly and evenly so they cook through — a mandoline makes this effortless.
- For food safety, make sure the beef is fully cooked — the USDA recommends 160°F (71°C) for ground beef.
- Let the casserole rest 10 minutes after baking so the layers set and slice cleanly. Allrecipes has more ideas for make-ahead casseroles.
