Recipe infographic: Breaded Chicken with Mushroom Cheese Sauce — ingredients and step-by-step visual guide

Crisp, golden breaded chicken smothered in a creamy mushroom and cheese sauce is pure weeknight comfort. A quick fry gives the chicken its crunchy crust, then the oven finishes the job while the sauce turns rich and bubbly. Breaded chicken topped with creamy mushroom cheese sauce, fresh from the oven

Ingredients

  • 2 chicken fillets
  • 1 egg
  • Flour and breadcrumbs, as needed
  • 150 g (about 2 cups) mushrooms, sliced
  • 100 ml (about 1/3 cup + 1 tbsp) cream
  • 150 g (1 1/2 cups) hard cheese, grated
  • Salt and pepper

Instructions

  1. Halve the fillets, season with salt and pepper, then dredge in egg, flour, egg again, and breadcrumbs.
  2. Fry in oil just 2 minutes per side — you only want a golden crust; the chicken finishes in the oven.
  3. Transfer to a baking dish. Saute the mushrooms with salt, add the cream and half the cheese.
  4. Spoon the sauce over the chicken, top with more cheese, and bake at 180-200 C (350-400 F) for 15-20 minutes until bubbly.

Tips

  • Do not overcook the chicken in the pan; a short fry keeps it juicy after baking.
  • Let the sauce thicken slightly before spooning it over the chicken so it coats evenly.
