Baked lavash rolls stuffed with seasoned meat and melted cheese in a creamy chili sauce

Ingredients

  • 500 g (1.1 lb) ground meat (any kind)
  • 200 g (7 oz) onion, finely chopped
  • 1 egg
  • Salt, pepper, paprika and garlic to taste
  • 3 tbsp sour cream
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste or chili sauce
  • 250 ml (1 cup) water
  • 3-4 thin lavash sheets
  • 300-400 g (10.5-14 oz) cheese, grated

Instructions

  1. For the filling, combine the ground meat with the onion, herbs, garlic, paprika, salt, pepper and egg. Mix well.
  2. Cut the lavash into strips, spread the meat mixture over each strip and roll into tubes. Arrange the rolls snugly in a baking dish.
  3. For the sauce, whisk the sour cream, chili sauce and water together and pour over the lavash rolls.
  4. Bake for 30 minutes, then scatter the grated cheese over the top and bake for 5 more minutes until melted and bubbly.

Tips

  • Arrange the rolls snugly in the dish so they soak up the sauce without falling apart.
  • Add the cheese only for the last 5 minutes so it turns golden and bubbly without overbaking.
  • usda.gov has handy guidelines on safe cooking temperatures for ground meat.
