This creamy, golden bake is the kind of comforting one-dish dinner that makes a busy weeknight feel special: thinly sliced potatoes, tender trout, and a garlicky sour-cream cheese sauce that bubbles up beautifully in the oven. It needs just a few simple ingredients, goes into one dish, and comes out hearty enough for the whole family. Ingredients
- 1 kg (2.2 lb) potatoes, thinly sliced
- 1 kg (2.2 lb) fish (trout), boned and cut into chunks
- 200 g (3/4 cup + 1 tbsp) sour cream
- 100-150 g (3.5-5 oz) hard cheese, grated
- 1-2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Slice the potatoes thinly. Clean the fish, remove the bones, and cut into bite-size pieces.
- Mix the sour cream with salt, pepper, oregano, minced garlic, and half the grated cheese.
- Spread the potatoes in a baking dish, arrange the fish on top, and coat everything with the sauce. Sprinkle with the remaining cheese.
- Bake at 180 C (350 F) for 45-50 minutes until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden.
- Rest 10 minutes before serving.
Tips
- Slice the potatoes as evenly as you can so they cook at the same rate and turn tender all the way through.
- For extra color, finish the bake under a hot grill for 2-3 minutes, watching closely so the cheese does not burn.
- Let the dish rest before slicing: it firms up, holds together better, and the sauce thickens slightly. If you want more ideas for cooking fish safely at home, the USDA site is a helpful starting point.
