Soft Sweet Buns Like Childhood

Recipe infographic: Soft Sweet Buns Like Childhood — ingredients and step-by-step visual guide

These pillowy sweet buns taste like a warm hug from childhood. Enriched with butter, milk, and a whisper of vanilla, they bake up golden and impossibly soft — perfect torn apart while still warm from the oven. If you love nostalgic baking, our Honey Cookies with Cinnamon and Ginger are another cozy favorite.

Freshly baked soft sweet buns, golden and fluffy, arranged on a tray

Ingredients

  • 300 ml (1 1/4 cups) warm milk
  • 100 g (7 tbsp) butter, melted
  • 1 egg
  • 4 tbsp sugar
  • 7 g (2 1/4 tsp) dry yeast
  • 1 packet vanilla sugar (or 1 tsp vanilla extract)
  • 1 tsp salt (not heaped)
  • 450 g + 50 g (about 4 cups) all-purpose flour

Instructions

  1. Stir the salt, 1 tablespoon of sugar, and yeast into the warm milk. Let stand in a warm place for 15 minutes until foamy.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk the egg with the melted butter, remaining sugar, and vanilla. Pour in the yeast mixture and stir.
  3. Sift in the flour and knead into a soft, slightly sticky dough. Cover and let rise in a warm place for 1.5 hours.
  4. Roll the dough into a large circle and cut into triangles (like croissants). Add sugar or your favorite filling, roll up each triangle, and let rise for 25 minutes.
  5. Brush with beaten egg yolk and bake at 180°C (350°F) for 25-30 minutes until golden.

Tips

Make sure the milk is warm, not hot — too much heat will kill the yeast and the dough will not rise. For extra-soft buns, brush them with a little melted butter as soon as they come out of the oven.
